PREGNANCY

The normal gestational period for pregnancy is 40 weeks. Pregnancy is divided into the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters. Each trimester is about 12 weeks long, having different developmental markers for the baby and symptoms for the mother.

1st Trimester:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Bloating

  • Constipation

  • Bleeding

  • Heartbeat can be heard at 6 weeks

2nd Trimester:​

  • Fetal movement

  • Round ligament pain

    • Feels like burning or pulling feeling on the sides of the lower abdomen area

    • Pains can be relieved with gentle stretching, hydration, heating pad, or maternity belt.

  • Gender of the baby can be determined

3rd Trimester:​

  • Pre-term labor

  • Braxton Hicks contractions

  • Labor

  • Rupture of membranes (water breaks)

Delivery

When the due date arrives, your Obstetrician will make sure you are comfortable in a facility that will promote a healthy delivery for both mother and baby. Complications can arrise during labor and delivery as well. Some of these complications include:​

  • Placental issues

  • Breech presentation of the fetus

  • Preeclampsia

  • Fetal distress

  • Shoulder dystocia

Some conditions that can lead to pregnancy complications are:​

  • Age (Under 20 & Over 35)

  • Smoking during pregnancy

  • Multiple Gestation (Twins, Triplets)

  • Excessive weight gain

  • Poor weight gain

  • History of recurrent miscarriages

  • Depression/Anxiety

  • Gestational Diabetes

  • Clotting (Coagulation) Disorders
